Android outselling iOS

Just a bit of clarification, Android is an operating system for mobile devices such as cellular phones, tablet computers and netbooks

Google Android smartphones are outselling the Apple iPhone in the US according to a recent report by analyst group Nielsen.

In terms of percentages, the number of smartphones sold this year using Google Android accounted for 27% of all smartphone sales. The Apple iPhone accounted for 23 percent of sales.

"While the iPhone has been the headline grabber over the last few years in the smartphone market, Google's Android OS has shown the most significant expansion in market share among current subscribers," writes Nielsen on its blog.

Although this comes as a surprise, it isn't a huge surprise because Apple sell just the one product, ie, the iPhone. Google however just offer an operating system for many companies to install as they wish which includes the likes of HTC, Motorola, Samsung as well as many others like Sony. The variation of Android smartphones is bound to beat a manufacturer who just has the one phone with the one OS.

70 Gigapixel Photo of Budapest Equipment

Yesterday I wrote about a 70 gigapixel image of Budapest that was captured and processed in to the largest image in the world. The photo was made up of 20,000 images individually captured and stitched together with software to provide an amazing view of Budapest that can be zoomed right in to.

The equipment used to capture the image included two 25 megapixel Sony A900 cameras that each had a 400mm Minolta lens attached along with 1.4 X teleconverters.

Although there is no indepth information regarding the cameras used and the process used (we have seen that before on previous videos), it's still interesting to see exactly what setup was used to capture such an amazing image.

The photo it's self is relatively clear except for when zooming right in (especially at a distance), but you do still get to look amazingly close to anything you can see on the screen.

Apple iPad iOS 3.2.1 Update

As well as pushing out the iOS 4.0.1 update to iPhone users yesterday, Apple also pushed out an update to iPad owners which fixes a few things and makes a few changes to the iPad. The update is minor but does promise to improve Wi-Fi connectivity for those who struggle with wireless issues.

The full iOS 3.2.1 update includes the following...

• Improved Wi-Fi connectivity • Fixed an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail • Addressed an issue that could cause video playback to freeze • Improved reliability of video-out when using iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter • Added Bing as an option for Safari's search field

The update is compatible with all Apple iPad devices which obviously includes the Wireless and 3G models of all capacities.

The update it's self is over 400MB in size, but once downloaded it takes just a few minutes to install. You can grab it now from iTunes when you sync up your iPad. The million dollar question still remains, is it worth it?

HaTERs!!! 80% chance of World Cup terrorist attack

The recent arrest in Iraq of Abdullah Azzam al-Qahtani, an alleged al-Qaeda supporter who claimed he was planning attacks on the Dutch and Danish teams, has revived debate on whether the tournament faces a threat of this kind.

Qahtani's scheme was later dismissed as posing no serious threat.

South African officials have long said their non-aligned status and a lack of any substantial local support for militant groups should insulate them from attacks during the June 11 to July 11 event.

Both the government and soccer's governing body Fifa, which is cooperating with foreign security agencies and Interpol, have helped strengthen that view by stating no viable threat had been identified.

However, analysts and security experts believe such actions cannot be ruled out because of the huge attention that even a small attack would get during the tournament.

Ronald Sandee, director of the Nefa Foundation, which investigates possible terrorist activities, briefed the United States Congress counter-terror caucus on possible threats to the tournament, the paper said.

He warned that Pakistani and Somali militants were running training camps in northern Mozambique and that trainees from these camps may have already crossed into South Africa to form or join cells planning attacks.

"I believe there is an 80% chance of an attack," he told the paper, adding that strike teams were well established in South Africa
